Queen Street Parklet

Works are nearing completion on the upper Queen Street parklet in Richmond.

The project, undertaken by Tasman District Council, is part of Waka Kotahi’s ‘Streets for people’ program that has been promoting active transportation through the creation of new pedestrian and bike friendly street layouts.

The parklet is designed to create a pleasant space to occupy for those visiting the existing shops on this part of Queen Street. As well as the existing fish and chip shop, dairy and Sprig & Fern Tavern, the space is also intended to host a new coffee cart vendor.

Designed to be ‘semi-permanent,’ the parklet uses an FRP grate flooring over timber framing, with a similar FRP panel acting as the canopy. The planting will grow up and over the canopy to create dappled shade and a softer appearance. A strip light (still to come) will run down the middle of the canopy to allow the parklet to be occupied after dark.
